House hunting

I approached a little two-story pistachio-green cottage by the forest. I knocked on the door and an older lady answered with a smile. It was a little lady with white hair in a bob cut.

I pushed the door in and entered without being invited in. I looked around before closing the door. Except it wasn’t me. It was Griselda. She had my body, but her face was changing.

It was Thursday morning. I woke up in my messy house. Sabrina slept by my side. I slid out of bed and dragged myself around.

I let Sabrina come down to the store while I cleaned and organized books. Hanna’s pie shop was still closed, and she was still in jail.

I sipped my coffee, watching the street. I had the blinds open, but I kept the store locked. Then I remembered my dream. What if it wasn’t a dream?

I took my mug to the counter and opened my laptop. I opened the maps and looked for a pistachio-colored house at the edge of a forest. That could be anywhere. But having in mind the witch didn’t have a car, and not even a broom, it was likely the house wasn’t too far.

There was a knock on the back door.

“Hey,” Ethan said, handing me a cup of coffee.

“Morning, where did you get this?” I was concerned.

“Don’t worry, it’s not from Brielle’s. I picked it up on my way back from a delivery.” Ethan assured me. I cracked the lid and smelled it. “It’s a caramel latte.” Ethan smiled. I walked away, letting him in. I went back to the computer. “What are you doing?”

“I had a dream with Griselda. She was still kind of looking like me, but changing. I saw her in a green house by the forest.” I kept looking at the satellite view.

“And you think it might not be a regular dream?” Ethan went to sit in the armchair fiddling with his cellphone. “What kind of house?”

“A little two-story cottage. Pistachio-green with a white railing and that little white gingerbread trim,” I responded.

We looked for the house in silence. Sabrina slept in my armchair.

A knock on the shop’s front door startled us both. Ethan got up to open it after making sure Sabrina was sound asleep.

“Morning,” Joe said.

“Any news of the investigation?” I came from behind the counter, pointing to a chair.

“I need to go back to the station. We have a lot to deal with. We got the inspector. Wesley Finnegan. We pressed the guy just a little, and he confessed everything,” Joe announced.

“Everything?” Ethan asked.

“He had debts that everyone knew about. A guy contacted him to offer him money to condemn Demi’s store and house, find your basement, and close Hanna’s place down. He met the guy once. The guy wore a hood and gave him a transparent bag with something for him to dump in Hanna’s kitchen, in the flour, the powdered milk, or anywhere he could,” JC reported.

“He did it!” I said. “Where is Hanna?”

“Hanna was released an hour ago,” Joe told us.
